Designated learning institutions (DLIs) must verify documents proving acceptance or enrolment for all post-secondary study permit applications, including

  • applications submitted outside Canada
  • applications submitted within Canada, including study permit extensions

Why you must verify submitted letters of acceptance or enrolment

The letter of acceptance (LOA) verification requirement for post-secondary DLIs is a regulatory requirement.

In addition, the LOA verification process helps protect vulnerable students and preserve the integrity of the International Student Program.

Any post-secondary DLI that fails to comply with the requirement may be subject to consequences for non-compliance, such as a warning or a suspension period of up to one year.

LOA verification is not the same as student enrolment compliance reporting

You must use the DLI Portal to report on the enrolment status of international students.

Tips for avoiding accidental non-compliance

  • In addition to your primary user, ensure that more than one secondary user has access to your DLI’s account.
  • Check your DLI’s account regularly, if not daily.
  • Don’t leave verification requests at “Not Started.”
  • Immediately contact the LOA Portal mailbox if any issue impacts your ability to complete the verification by the deadline.
