Who can get a special or diplomatic child passport
Your child may qualify for an official passport if they’re:
- a member of your immediate family
- usually living with you
- travelling with you or joining you abroad after you leave
- listed on 1 of the following:
- the Posting Confirmation Form (PCF) issued by Global Affairs Canada
- the Posting Message issued by DND (National Defense)
- the memorandum from your department (in cases where PCFs aren’t issued)
Additional considerations for children over 19 years old
19 to 22 years old
If they’re going to school
Their official passports are valid for 5 years or until 6 months after their 25th birthday, whichever comes first.
If they aren’t going to school
Their official passports are valid until 6 months after their 22nd birthday.
23 to 25 years old
If they’re going to school
Their passports are valid until 6 months after their 25th birthday.
Their applications must include:
- an email or letter from you (or another parent or guardian) saying your child is enrolled at a school
- include the name of the school as well as the duration of the course or program, or
- a transcript or document from the school showing the duration of the course or program
If they aren’t going to school
They’re not eligible for an official passport.
Older than 25 years old
If they’re going to school
You must contact us before applying. We’ll check if they’re eligible.
