Stakeholders from Quebec were invited to attend an in-person dialogue session to share their perspectives on the future of Canada’s immigration system.
There was general agreement that Canada is an attractive country for immigrants and that it’s important to promote our immigration system around the world and to clearly communicate policies, programs and rules.
There was also some discussion about the challenges related to being a country of choice for immigrants, namely the high volume of applications and the resulting wait times and backlogs.
Among the other topics of discussion were family reunification, irregular migration, the needs of temporary workers, employers and international students, and the support required for rural communities in welcoming immigrants.
Stakeholders had many ideas about what a future system should look like. They noted that procedures should be digitized to facilitate an agile, fluid and accessible system, and the need for more employment flexibility for international students.
Stakeholders also advised that they would like to see more accessible pathways to permanent residence for temporary workers, with a transition experience that is well supported.
They also emphasized the importance of adopting a more human approach to immigration.
