Stakeholders from Yukon, the Northwest Territories and Nunavut were invited to attend a hybrid (in-person and virtual) dialogue session to share their perspectives on the future of Canada’s immigration system.
Attendees discussed the importance of immigration as an engine for economic growth in northern communities, including those experiencing labour market shortages, where the need for retention is crucial.
They also noted challenges with the availability of affordable housing and the cost of living, which can make it difficult for newcomers to settle and build a life in the North.
Additionally, there was some discussion about settlement services—how they could be enhanced for Francophones, how to address issues of gender-based violence, as well as the potential for additional services for temporary residents.
Participants underlined the importance of consultation with Indigenous communities and strong partnerships with the territories to develop immigration policies and programs. They also discussed the need for faster, user-friendly and digitalized processing of immigration applications.
