Stakeholders from Atlantic provinces were invited to attend an in-person session to share their perspectives on the future of Canada’s immigration system.
They identified strengths of Canada’s system, including multiple pathways to immigration, Canada’s renowned support during humanitarian crises, and the success of special immigration programs like post-graduation work permit programs and the previous pilot for immigration to the Atlantic – now the Atlantic Immigration Program.
The stakeholders also discussed where Canada’s system has opportunities to improve, including coordination between partners and stakeholders, communication with clients, and barriers to permanent residency and inclusion for newcomers.
It was also mentioned that in the Atlantic region, the seasonality of sectors makes it difficult for employers and newcomers to navigate work permit requirements.
Atlantic stakeholders described a future system that is responsive and anticipates economic and humanitarian needs, with human-focused policies and practices.
They indicated that the system should allow transparency for clients, and prioritize credential recognition and aligning newcomer skills with labour needs.
