About the fixed phone lines initiative

The Government of Canada is transitioning to softphones as the default voice service for GC workers. This change supports cost savings and modernizes communication tools as part of Budget 2025.

Non-essential fixed phone lines are being eliminated.

Essential fixed phone lines remain until they are replaced with cost-effective, Internet-based solutions. Fixed lines are only for specific workpoints with technical, operational or business needs.

Phased approach

SSC is using a building-by-building approach. This ensures that departments and agencies have time to prepare, validate their needs and maintain business continuity throughout the transition. Lessons learned during the rollout are being applied as the initiative progresses to enhance efficiency and effectiveness.
