"Let us help you get your benefits!" Indigenous credit and benefit short return

Did you know that you may be eligible to receive important benefits and credits by filing a tax return, even if you had low or no income, tax exempt income, or you received social assistance or income assistance payments in 2025?

You may be able to file a tax return using our “Let us help you get your benefits!” Indigenous Credit and benefit short return form.

You can use the “Let us help you get your benefits!” Indigenous Credit and benefit short return if all the following apply:

  • You identify as a First Nation, Inuk or Métis
  • You were a resident of Canada throughout 2025
  • You were not bankrupt at any time in 2025
  • Your taxable income for 2025 is zero, or it is equal to or less than the income levels in the table. For more information, refer to the 2025 income threshold chart (PDF, 77 KB).
  • You did not make any repayments of universal child care benefit payments in 2025
  • You did not make any repayments in 2025 for an overpayment of COVID-19 benefits received from 2020 to 2022
  • You are not filing this short return for a deceased person

Note: This form is not available to download.

You can get the form from your local friendship centre, community representative, band council office, through Service Canada Community Outreach and Liaison Services, CRA Outreach Program, or a Northern Service Centre. If they don't have any forms on hand, they can order them for you.

Note

Residents of Quebec who qualify to use these forms will still need to file their Quebec tax return with Revenu Québec. In Quebec, the CRA and Revenu Québec work together to deliver the Federal and Provincial Individual tax filing assistance initiative. For information on filing a Quebec provincial tax return, contact Revenu Québec.

Free virtual tax clinics

If you would prefer to file your taxes with some support, you can look for a free virtual tax clinic hosted by a community organization near you through the Community Volunteer Income Tax Program (CVITP). These free clinics are available for individuals who have a modest income and a simple tax situation. Volunteers may assist you in doing your taxes for free, by videoconference, by phone, or through a document drop-off arrangement.

To find a free virtual tax clinic, please check our national directory or, if you live in Quebec, visit Income tax assistance – volunteer program.
