How much you can get

Previous name: GST/HST credit

The Canada Groceries and Essentials Benefit (CGEB) payments are not taxable. Your payments will vary based on your situation and may include an amount for related provincial or territorial benefit programs. You do not have to report the benefit payments you receive on your tax return.

How your benefit is calculated

Your benefit payments are based on the following:

  • Your adjusted family net income
  • Your marital status
  • The number of children under 19 years old you have who are eligible for the Canada child benefit, CGEB, or both

Estimate your benefit amount

You can use the child and family benefits calculator to find out how much your CGEB payments may be, and which other benefits and credits you can get.

Payment amounts are recalculated every July

Your benefit amount is recalculated every July based on the information from your previous year's tax return. Each payment period starts in July and ends in June of the following year.

For example, the information from your 2025 tax return determines the CGEB amount you get for the payment period from July 2026 to June 2027. You could get up to:

  • $679 if you are a single individual
  • $890 if you are married or have a common-law partner
  • $234 for each eligible child under the age of 19

An increase of your 2025 adjusted family net income could affect your payments starting in July  2026.

What affects your payment calculation

The Canada Revenue Agency recalculates your benefit payment when:

  • A reassessment of either your or your spouse or common-law partner's tax return results in a change to your adjusted family net income
  • Your eligible child turns 19 years of age
  • Your marital status changes
  • The number of eligible children in your care changes
  • A recipient dies
  • You start, or stop, sharing custody of a child

Be sure to keep your personal information up to date to avoid any disruption to your payments.

Where to find your benefit amount

The CRA will send you a notice showing your annual entitlement amount and the schedule for your quarterly payments.

You will only receive a notice if you are entitled to the CGEB. Your notice will be sent to your CRA account if you have one, otherwise you will receive it by mail.

If you are receiving your notices by mail and want to access your information online, you can register for a CRA account.

If you have a CRA account

You can sign in to your CRA account to view:

  • Your next expected payment date and amount
  • The status and amount of each payment for the year, from July to the following June
  • Your statement of account for the benefit, including details about amounts and entitlements, dates, and balances

How to view your payment details in your CRA account:

  1. Sign into your CRA account
  2. Choose your Individual account
  3. On the Overview screen, find your next expected payment under "Benefits and credits"
  4. Select Benefits and credits to find detailed payment information
  5. Go to Canada Groceries and Essentials Benefit (formerly the GST/HST credit) to find your next expected payment date and amount, payment schedule, and your statement of account
