Small culverts program
Over 4 years, we’ll repair and replace culverts along the Alaska Highway, targeting a different group of culverts each year. This includes:
- installing new pipe culverts
- repairing and decommissioning existing culverts
- installing erosion protection measures
- restoring environmentally disturbed areas
Contract award for year 1
- Contract award date: August 2024
- Purpose: Repair 10 large culverts along the highway
- Location: Between Fort St. John, British Columbia, and Watson Lake, Yukon (kilometre [km] 313 to km 507)
- Recipient: In-Line Contracting Partnership
- Value: Over $4.3 million
- Work completion date: End of March 2025
- Status: Completed
Contract award for year 2
- Contract award date: August 2025
- Purpose: Replace 54 small culverts along the highway using Canadian-fabricated steel
- Location: km 133 to km 968
- Recipient: In-Line Contracting Partnership
- Value: Over $13.4 million
- Work start date: November 2025
- Work completion date: End of March 2026
- Status: Completed
Planning for year 3 work
- Purpose: Replace 41 culverts along the highway
- Location: km 133 to km 968
- Status: Planned for winter 2026–2027
Planning for year 4 work
- Purpose: Replace 62 culverts along the highway
- Location: km 133 to km 968
- Status: Planned for winter 2027–2028
Asphalt overlay program
We launched a 3-year program to extend the service life of aging asphalt by applying surface treatments or overlays where cracking and rutting occur. After we complete the surface treatments, the areas will have rumble strips installed and lines painted.

- Location: km 390 to km 451
- Recipient: Peters Brothers Construction Limited
- Value: Over $13.5 million
- Status: Completed
Contract award for year 2
- Contract award date: December 2025
- Purpose: Repair 58 km of asphalt road surface
- Location: km 133 to 149, km 182 to 197 and km 458 to 485
- Recipient: Peters Brothers Construction Limited
- Value: $13.9 million
- Status: In progress
Planning for year 3 work
- Purpose: Repair 41 km of asphalt road surface
- Location: km 149 to 182 and km 197 to 205
- Status: Planned for summer 2027
Bridge deck program of work
We’re replacing the bridge decks and bridge barriers on both the Beatton River Bridge and the Bougie Creek Bridge.
- Contract award date: March 3, 2026
- Purpose: Replace bridge decks and bridge barriers
- Location: km 232 (Beatton River Bridge) and km 357 (Bougie Creek Bridge)
- Recipient: Formula Contractors Piling and Bridge Ltd.
- Value: $14.1 million
- Work start date: Spring 2026
- Work completion date: September 30, 2026
- Status: In progress

We plan and execute projects based on recommendations from regular inspection reports.
The most significant projects underway or planned include:
- km 384: bridge culvert #3 rehabilitation
- km 366: Adsette Creek Bridge rehabilitation
- km 555 to 762: non-structural spray patching
- km 628: McDonald Bridge substructure repairs
- km 763: Liard River Bridge stringer repairs
- km 780: Liard River erosion mitigations
- km 897: drainage repairs
- bridge deck program of work (Beatton River and Bougie Creek bridges)
- Sikanni and Irons Creek Salt and Sand Storage Facility replacement
Contamination assessment and cleanup
Over the next 5 years, there will be more than 50 Federal Contaminated Sites Action Plan projects on the Alaska Highway, with costs ranging from $25,000 to $2 million.
We’ll assess each site to determine contamination levels and need for cleanup.
For each project, the cleanup might involve tasks such as:
- carrying out excavation work
- transporting the waste to a disposal facility
- using an on-site bioremediation facility to treat the contamination
