What a professional buyer does

As a procurement professional, you are a trusted advisor responsible for many elements of the overall procurement process. As you grow in this role, you may have the opportunity to perform various important and exciting functions, such as:

  • managing solicitations and evaluations
  • negotiating complex, multi-million dollar contracts on behalf of the federal government
  • awarding and managing contracts
  • engaging with vendors and various stakeholders
  • providing expert advice
  • developing procurement solutions to support federal government programs

What to expect as a participant

As a participant, you will develop the skills, knowledge and experience to plan, negotiate and administer contracts on behalf of PSPC. This is accomplished through hands-on experience, developmental work assignments, and coaching and mentorship.

Developmental work assignments

Intern officers work with different teams by completing rotational assignments.

Learning and development for intern officers is supplemented by:

  • hands-on experience
  • written assignments
  • self-study
  • presentations
  • workshops
  • online training
  • meetings

Coaching and mentoring

You will be paired with a mentor and a coach. Daily support and guidance will be provided throughout the program.

Career advancement opportunities

PSPC is the largest government employer of procurement officers, so there are many career advancement opportunities. Program graduates have gone on to obtain executive-level positions within the federal government.
