Compensation process

Finalizing your claim

If you are notified through your web portal account confirming that your declaration has been accepted, you will be asked to review and sign the Funding Agreement and provide your payment information. If you submitted a paper declaration, you will be notified by phone and mail.

Payment of your claim

Payment for your claim will be issued by direct deposit or by cheque within 45 business days after firearm validation is complete. Please note that direct deposit is the fastest and most efficient way to receive your payment.

Payments will be issued for each claimed firearm individually. If you have multiple firearms in your claim, you may receive multiple deposits in your bank account. You will be able to review and track your claim/payment status through your web portal account.

For firearms that have been turned in

Firearms collected by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) or participating local police under this program will be sent in consolidated shipments to a processing facility where they will be validated and destroyed. Firearms collected through mobile collection units will be validated and destroyed on site. Payment of your claim will be issued within 45 business days after firearms have been successfully validated. Please note that firearms validated and destroyed on site through mobile collection units may result in faster receipt of payment.

For firearms that have been deactivated

If you choose to deactivate your firearm(s), payment will be issued within 45 business days after your deactivation receipt(s) and deactivation form(s) have been uploaded to your web portal account and validated by the program.

You may be eligible for reimbursement of the full cost of shipping your firearms to and from the nearest business authorized to perform deactivations if you:

  • use a licensed carrier approved by the RCMP to ship your firearms
  • do not have a personal, ownership relationship with either the authorized business or the licensed carrier
  • include the receipt(s) for shipping costs when you upload your deactivation receipt(s) and deactivation form(s) in your account
