Become a CPHS placement site

The success of the Canadian Public Health Service (CPHS) program depends largely on the quality of our placement sites. The sites provide the mentorship and opportunities that are essential to the overall learning experience. In return, sites gain access to highly qualified public health professionals, eager to share their skills and knowledge.

Eligibility

Municipal, regional, provincial and territorial public health departments, laboratories and agencies, as well as non-governmental organizations, are all eligible to become PHO placement sites. Placements may also be shared among organizations. To qualify as a placement site, an organization must be able to:

• provide an appropriate level of supervision
• offer a suitable work setting (space, equipment, and access to relevant information);
• negotiate and abide by a Memorandum of Understanding with CPHS; and
• help select and evaluate candidates for placement.

Apply

Organizations submit a formal proposal to CPHS explaining how the placement helps address a particular public health need and describing the organization’s ability to provide learning opportunities and supervision. The proposal should also outline the skills and abilities required for the placement position.

An advisory group of representatives from a variety of public health organizations assess the proposals. CPHS tries to place candidates in a broad range of public health settings and locations across Canada.
