Treatment of Seoul virus infection

Access information on how Seoul virus infections are diagnosed and how they are treated.

On this page:

How are Seoul virus infections diagnosed?

Seoul virus infection is diagnosed based on symptoms and laboratory testing.

History of contact with rodents, or of cleaning areas contaminated by infected rodents, can also be important. This information will indicate to your health care provider that you may have an infection associated with a rodent.

How are Seoul virus infections treated?

Supportive care is given to patients with Seoul virus infections.

Care includes fluid therapy by giving the patient liquids directly into the vein to maintain blood volume, blood pressure, and electrolyte (sodium, potassium, chloride) levels. Oxygen mask may also be used as well as appropriate treatment of any secondary infections. Dialysis may be required in severe cases of kidney failure. Ribavirin, an antiviral drug, has been shown to reduce the illness severity and lower deaths related to hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome (HFRS) if used very early in the disease.

Consult your health care provider as soon as possible if you have had contact with rodents and have some of the symptoms of a Seoul virus infection. The sooner you get treatment, the better your chances for recovery.
