How can non-polio enterovirus infections be prevented?
There is no vaccine to protect you from non-polio enterovirus infections.
It is also hard to protect yourself and your children from the virus because:
- most people do not show any symptoms
- the virus is easily spread
However, you can decrease the likelihood that you or others will get sick from the virus by:
- washing your hands often, especially:
- when you are around someone who is sick
- before and after eating
- after you have been in public
- after using the washroom
- after changing diapers
- after coughing and sneezing
- after touching surfaces and objects used by others
- avoiding hugging and kissing people who are sick
- coughing and sneezing into your arm, not your hand
- keeping your hands away from your face
- keeping common surface areas clean, such as countertops
- eating healthy foods and exercising regularly to keep your immune system strong
Schools and day-cares may close during a non-polio enterovirus outbreak to prevent young children from getting sick.
