How can non-polio enterovirus infections be prevented?

There is no vaccine to protect you from non-polio enterovirus infections.

It is also hard to protect yourself and your children from the virus because:

  • most people do not show any symptoms
  • the virus is easily spread

However, you can decrease the likelihood that you or others will get sick from the virus by:

  • washing your hands often, especially:
  • when you are around someone who is sick
  • before and after eating
  • after you have been in public
  • after using the washroom
  • after changing diapers
  • after coughing and sneezing
  • after touching surfaces and objects used by others
  • avoiding hugging and kissing people who are sick
  • coughing and sneezing into your arm, not your hand
  • keeping your hands away from your face
  • keeping common surface areas clean, such as countertops
  • eating healthy foods and exercising regularly to keep your immune system strong

Schools and day-cares may close during a non-polio enterovirus outbreak to prevent young children from getting sick.
