What are the risks of getting cyclosporiasis?

Your risk may increase if you eat contaminated fresh foods imported from tropical and subtropical areas where the Cyclospora parasite is common.

Imported foods that have been linked to outbreaks of cyclosporiasis include:

  • basil
  • cilantro
  • raspberries
  • blackberries
  • mesclun lettuce
  • snow and snap peas
  • pre-packaged salad mix

Who is most at risk?

Canadians at the greatest risk of getting cyclosporiasis are travellers to high-risk countries who:

  • eat fresh produce
  • drink untreated water

You are at higher risk for a longer or more severe illness if you:

  • are a young child
  • are an older adult
  • have a weakened immune system (cannot fight disease easily)
