About the HLCD
The Government of Canada recognizes that cancer is a major health issue for Canadians. Every year, thousands of Canadians are diagnosed with or die from cancer. It affects not only those living with the disease, but also their families, friends and the organizations and communities that support them.
This Cancer Community-Based Funding Program is part of the larger Integrated Strategy on Healthy Living and Chronic Disease, a $300 million investment that was launched in 2005 to provide federal leadership across a range of public health actions. These actions promote the health of Canadians and reduce the impact of chronic diseases in Canada through innovative and integrated approaches to combat major preventable chronic diseases. The Strategy is balanced by complementary disease-specific investments for cardiovascular disease, diabetes and cancer.
The Cancer Community-Based Funding Program funds innovative projects in the areas of: education and awareness for those at high risk of developing cancer; increasing the awareness and practice of cancer prevention; and enhancing the skill sets of health practitioners and community health workers to work in the areas of cancer prevention and cancer patient and survivor support.
