Project support
Projects are referred to the Major Projects Office when the Government of Canada has determined that they warrant support and stewardship in one or more areas.
We bring people together to move major projects forward faster, responsibly, and sustainably, while respecting the rights of Indigenous Peoples and protecting the environment.
We are a single point of contact for referred projects throughout the federal regulatory and financing processes. The goal is to complete approvals quickly so proponents and investors can proceed to investment decisions.
We assess projects and provide recommendations on the best path forward, tailored to the type of project, its status, and unique requirements.
Resolving policy or regulatory challenges and reducing risk
We provide guidance on federal assessment, regulatory, and permitting requirements. We work with federal departments and agencies to improve coordination, including identifying opportunities for simultaneous reviews (instead of subsequent) and permits where appropriate, and reducing duplication across regulatory processes.
Financing structure or investments
We can help projects coordinate and structure federal financing by working with the private sector, provincial and territorial partners, and federal departments and Crown corporations including the Canada Infrastructure Bank, Export Development Canada, Canada Indigenous Loan Guarantee Corporation, and Canada Growth Fund.
Indigenous engagement and consultations
We work with federal partners to provide guidance on engagement with Indigenous Peoples whose rights or interests may be impacted by a project. This includes advice consultation processes, and available federal resources, and ensuring engagement is meaningful and respectful of the Crown’s duty to consult and uphold Indigenous rights.
Listing under the Building Canada Act
Projects that qualify for listing under the Building Canada Act (BCA) meet the criteria set out in the BCA. Designated projects benefit from coordinated federal review and approvals process to streamline decision-making while maintaining environmental protections and Indigenous consultation requirements.
