How to prove you’re eligible

You must submit a request for consideration to prove that you’re eligible for this public policy. Follow the steps below to prove that you’re eligible to study without a study permit as an apprentice under this public policy.

Step 1: Make sure you have what you need

You need a scanner or camera to create electronic copies of your documents.

Step 2: Get your documents ready

You need to gather the right documents to prove that you’re eligible for this study permit exemption. You must provide all of the following:

Step 3: Submit a web form request

To submit your request for consideration for the study permit exemption, follow these steps:

  1. Access the web form.
  2. Select Update or ask about your application and then Add a document to your application.
  3. Make the selection that applies to your situation when asked: Who are you?
  4. Fill in your personal information and include an email address where we can contact you.
  5. Under What is your application number?, type the valid work permit number that you’re using to prove you’re eligible for this study permit exemption.
    1. In the drop-down menus below, make the following selections:
      • What did you apply for?: Temporary Residence
      • What application did you submit?: Work Permit
  6. Under What’s your Unique Client Identifier (UCI) number?, type the 8- or 10-digit number that’s on your work permit (don’t include the hyphens). It looks like this: 0000-0000 or 00-0000-0000.
  7. In the Tell us about your request section, do the following:
    1. When asked Did we ask you to add the document(s) to your application?, select Yes, you asked me to add document(s).
    2. In the explanation box, be sure to include
      • Apprenticeship 25-27, so your request is identified as part of this study permit exemption
      • a description of each document you attach in the Upload your document(s) section below
  8. In the Upload your document(s) section, upload proof
    1. that you hold a job in one of the eligible construction fields
    2. of your apprenticeship agreement registered by the relevant provincial or territorial apprenticeship and certification authority
  9. Select Review your request.
  10. If all the information is correct, select Submit your request.
If you can’t use the web form

If you can’t use the web form, you can call the Client Support Centre at 1-888-242-2100.

  • Service is available in French and English.
  • You can reach an agent from Monday to Friday, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. (your local time). They’re not available on statutory holidays.

When you call

  • tell the agent that you’re requesting consideration for the study permit exemption under the construction apprentice public policy by using the code Apprenticeship 25-27
  • tell the agent your valid work permit number
  • update your contact information, including an email address, phone number and mailing address where we can reach you

There will be delays in processing if you don’t use the web form.
