What happens after you request an exemption to study without a study permit as a construction apprentice depends on whether your request was approved.

If we approve your request for this exemption

If you meet the eligibility criteria, you’ll be issued an authorization letter letting you know that you can study without a study permit until whichever of the following dates comes first:

• the date your work permit expires, or
• the date this public policy expires or is revoked

How to prove you’re authorized to study without a study permit

To prove you’re authorized to study without a study permit, you must show your authorization letter to the school where you plan to study.

Your employment contract

It’s your responsibility to come to an agreement with your employer if you want to change any of the conditions of your employment contract. We’re not responsible for checking that you follow your employment contract.

Example: To study, you may need to work fewer hours than the number listed on your employment contract.

If we refuse your request for this exemption

If we refuse your request for consideration because you don’t meet the eligibility criteria

• we’ll let you know in writing
• you’ll need to get a study permit if you’d still like to study
