Passport and travel document service fees have increased

As of March 31, 2026, most fees for passports and travel document services have increased. Learn how these changes may affect your application.

We aim to process applications from outside Canada and the US within 20 business days, plus mailing time.

If you need a passport urgently or in exceptional circumstances, such as illness or a death in the family

How to renew your passport

Complete the form

  • Fill out the form on your computer to save time.
    • Save the form on your computer and use Adobe Reader 10 or higher.
    • Don’t use your phone or tablet. The form will not work properly.
  • Read the instructions at the end of the form to make sure you’ve completed it properly.
  • Sign each page of the application.
If your passport has a valid visa in it

Tell us on your form if you need the visa and want your original passport back. If you don’t, the visa could be damaged when the previous passport is cancelled.

If your passport was lost, stolen or damaged
Your most recent passport was lost or stolen

If it’s still valid

You need to contact us as soon as possible to report the theft or loss of your previous passport.

Since your passport is still valid, you must

  1. submit a declaration concerning a lost, stolen, inaccessible, damaged or found Canadian travel document [PPTC 203] (PDF, 1.3 MB) with your application
  2. pay the extra $45 fee for replacing a lost or stolen passport

You only need the main application form. Complete it and then submit it to us.

If it’s still valid

You must submit a declaration concerning a lost, stolen, inaccessible, damaged or found Canadian travel document [PPTC 203] (PDF, 1.33 MB) with your application.

If it’s expired

You only need the main application form. Complete it and then submit it to us.

If your physical appearance has changed for medical reasons

You may be eligible to replace your passport photo.

Passport applications outside Canada and the US can be submitted

  • by mail or
  • in person at a Government of Canada office abroad

Not every office accepts both in-person and mailed applications. Some only allow in-person applications in urgent circumstances.

Paying your fees

Your fees depend on what services you’re getting. How you can pay them depends on how you’re applying. You can pay online or in person.

Keep a copy of your payment for your records. If you pay the wrong fees or don’t use one of the methods listed below, we may return your application without processing it.

You may be able to pay in person. It depends on the office where you apply.

Contact the embassy or consulate before you visit to ask if you can pay in person.

There’s another fee for replacing a lost or stolen passport that’s still valid.

Additional fee for replacing a lost or stolen passport that was still valid

You must pay this fee if you report a passport as lost or stolen and are applying for a replacement. This fee does not include the cost of the new passport.

You won’t get a refund for the service fee if you:

  • cancel your application
  • are refused a travel document
  • are issued a passport for a shorter validity period than requested
    • For example, if we issue a passport that’s valid for less than 5 years, despite you applying for a 5- or 10-year passport, you won’t get a refund.
      • This may happen if you’ve lost or damaged your passport multiple times.

Only the consular fees (opens in a new tab) , which apply to all adult applications, are refundable if a passport is not issued.
