X-rays: Overview
X-rays are a type of ionizing radiation that can pass through materials. X-ray technology is a valuable tool in medicine, industry, scientific research and security.
Some uses for X-rays include:
- killing bacteria in food
- scanning baggage at airports
- tracking blood flow in patients
- analyzing the structure of crystals
- helping to diagnose and treat cancer
- detecting dental structures and cavities
- detecting flaws in machinery or products
- looking at broken bones and swallowed objects
X-rays are highly energetic and can cause the material through which they pass to become charged, or ionized. Ionization can damage cells or DNA in living matter. However, when used appropriately, the benefits of X-rays far outweigh their risks.
