Approach for a Subset of Inorganic and Organometallic Substances

The approach

In April 2018, the Government of Canada published a proposed Chemicals Management Plan Approach for a Subset of Inorganic and Organometallic Substances for a 60-day public comment period. Comments provided on the approach and the Government’s responses are outlined in the summary of public comments received.

This approach addresses 59 inorganic and organometallic substances that were identified as priorities for assessment as they met the categorization criteria under subsection 73(1) of the Canadian Environmental Protection Act, 1999 (CEPA), were considered a priority based on other human health concerns or were identified for further consideration following prioritization of the Revised In Commerce List (R-ICL). The list of substances covered under this initiative can be found within the approach document.

This approach identifies the inorganic and organometallic substances for which assessment activities can be considered as having already taken place under CEPA, and proposes that, as such, these substances not undergo further assessment at this time. Addressing these substances in this way will facilitate focusing attention on those substances or groups that have not yet been subject to assessment.

Additional assessment or management activities may be undertaken if new hazard or exposure information becomes available which may impact previous risk analyses for these substances. This information may be identified through international activities, further information gathering activities, or results of risk management activities including performance evaluation and subsequent changes to risk management.
