Handling Disability Management Cases - The Tool

This section is designed to help manage a case where an employee becomes ill or injured. It is intended to provide guidance from the time a case is identified, through the case management process to the successful return of the employee to work. For more information, see How to Use This Tool.

The processes for handling cases cover the following topics:

The Treasury Board of Canada Secretariat would like to thank the Canada Revenue Agency for sharing its expertise and its Managing Injury and Illness Process Tool, which was used in developing this section.

The applicable policies and guidelines of the Government of Canada, as well as those of each department and agency, should be consulted with respect to specific cases. The processes described here do not apply to RCMP or Department of National Defence regular (uniformed) members. In each of these unique operating environments, employees are subject to the Royal Canadian Mounted Police Act and the National Defence Act, respectively.

How to Use This Tool

This tool will allow you to proceed step by step through the activities involved in managing injury and illness cases and will provide you with the relevant information you need to effectively support employees throughout such situations.

It is recommended that you start at the beginning of the process for each new case in order to avoid missing any important steps. If you must stop at any point, you may resume the process by returning to the Tool for Handling Disability Management Cases or if you prefer, by navigating through the Process Index.

It is essential that you consult with your human resources department early and throughout the process in order to access its guidance and support for complex situations.
