Minister LeBlanc chairs meeting of Advisory Committee on Canada-U.S. Economic Relations to discuss latest trade developments

Today, the Honourable Dominic LeBlanc, President of the King’s Privy Council for Canada and Minister responsible for Canada-U.S. Trade, Intergovernmental Affairs, Internal Trade and One Canadian Economy, along with the Honourable Mélanie Joly, Minister of Industry and Minister responsible for Canada Economic Development for Quebec Regions, the Honourable François-Philippe Champagne, Minister of Finance and National Revenue, and the Honourable Janice Charette, Canada’s Chief Trade Negotiator to the United States, met with members of the Advisory Committee on Canada-U.S. Economic Relations to discuss the latest developments in the Canada-U.S. trade relationship and their impact on Canada. This meeting serves as a follow-up to the meeting on August 22, 2026, marking the eighth time Members have convened since April.

Ministers Champagne and Joly provided an update on Canada’s targeted response to the new unjustified U.S. tariffs, and on measures deployed to support workers and businesses affected by the tariffs. The ministers underscored Canada’s commitment to defending its economic interests while maintaining a fair and stable economic relationship with the U.S. 

Minister LeBlanc emphasized that Canada remains committed to constructive engagement where it can advance a mutually beneficial agreement that respects Canadian sovereignty and advances the interests of Canadian workers, farmers, businesses and families.

Committee members exchanged views on Canada’s response to the tariffs, including efforts to strengthen economic resilience, support affected sectors, build competitive industries at home and expand market opportunities. The discussion also highlighted the importance of a unified Team Canada approach, with governments, industry, labour and other partners working together to ensure Canada’s response reflects national priorities and promotes long-term economic growth.
