Key messages

  • This year’s Financial Literacy Month campaign builds on the momentum of the “Talk Money” theme and encourages Canadians to have purposeful conversations about money and financial moments that can help them feel more confident and increase their well-being.
  • Talking about money is an important first step toward building financial confidence and navigating an increasingly complex financial marketplace.
  • Financial literacy is all about being able to navigate real-life financial decisions when it matters most—whether that's taking out a mortgage, managing debt, choosing financial products, or protecting themselves from fraud.
  • This Financial Literacy Month, let’s talk and raise awareness about fraud. Anyone—regardless of age, education, income or background—can be victimized by fraudsters. As a society, we are still reluctant to talk about negative experiences that may carry stigmas, like financial fraud.
  • The “Talk Money” campaign supports the National Financial Literacy Strategy goals, including building financial confidence, reducing stigma around money-related topics, such as fraud, and improving access to trustworthy financial help.

Spotlight activity: If your wallet could talk...

Activity overview

Money conversations can shape our decisions, build confidence, and help us navigate life's challenges and opportunities.

"If Your Wallet Could Talk" invites individuals and organizations alike to share a real-life money story. Participants are encouraged to reflect on a moment when a conversation about money helped them make a decision, overcome a challenge, plan ahead, protect themselves from financial risks, or better manage their money.

Whether your story is about spending, saving, borrowing, planning, protecting your money, or simply starting a conversation, the goal is to help Canadians Talk Money and learn from one another's experiences.

If your wallet could talk

How to participate

Think about a time when talking about money made a difference. Then tell your or your organization’s story.

Share it as a video, a social media post, a photo and caption, a blog post, an article, or any other format that feels authentic.

Individuals can share personal experiences, while organizations can highlight stories from staff, clients, members, or communities, or connect stories to the programs, services, and resources they provide.

Wherever you choose to share, use #FLM2026 and #TalkMoney to help inspire Canadians to start their own conversations about money.

Need inspiration?

Examples of real-life financial moments that helped shape a decision, perspective, or outcome:

  • A parent or caregiver who taught you how to save for something important.
  • A conversation with a partner about financial goals, priorities, or managing expenses together.
  • Talking with someone about debt and learning strategies to manage repayments.
  • A discussion that encouraged you to start saving for a major goal, emergency fund, or future purchase.
  • A conversation that helped you recognize and avoid a scam or fraud attempt.
  • Sharing money lessons with your children, grandchildren, students, or community members.

There is no right or wrong story to share. Whether it's about spending, saving, borrowing, planning, protecting your money, or simply starting a conversation, the goal is to help Canadians Talk Money and learn from one another's experiences.
