Arctic Ocean watershed

Map of outline of Canada's Arctic Ocean watershed.

The Arctic Ocean watershed extends 3.5 million km2 and drains two-thirds of the Alberta territory, northern British Columbia and Saskatchewan, and part of the Yukon, the Northwest Territories and Nunavut, including the Arctic Islands. The Mackenzie River is the longest stream, followed by the Peace, Athabasca and Liard rivers.  In northwestern Alberta, the Athabasca River runs through large deposits of bituminous oil sands. The Slave, Athabasca and Great Bear lakes are also part of this watershed. The major cities are Fort McMurray and Yellowknife.
