Apply for a SIN

A Social Insurance Number (SIN) is a 9-digit number you need to work in Canada or access government programs and benefits.

Find or get a copy of your SIN online

If you know your SIN, you do not need to apply, you can view and print it by signing in or registering for My Service Canada Account (MSCA).

Service Canada no longer issues plastic SIN cards.

When to apply

You must apply and provide all required documents (even if you already have a SIN) when you:

Who can apply

  • Anyone 12 years or older can apply for their own SIN
  • For children under the age of majority (the legal adult age in their province or territory), a parent or legal guardian can apply on their behalf
  • A legal guardian or representative can also apply for adults in their care

Registering a newborn

If your child is under one year old and you haven‘t registered their birth, you can apply for their SIN through your province‘s Newborn Registration Service.

This service is available in all Canadian provinces but not yet in the Territories.

If you live in a Territory, you can apply for your child‘s SIN directly through Service Canada.
