What is LMIA Online

LMIA Online is a reliable and secure online portal. It allows Canadian employers and third-party representatives (on behalf of employers) to submit Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA) applications to Service Canada electronically.

What you need to do before you apply using LMIA Online

Important information for third-party representatives

If you’re a third-party representative and you want to apply for an LMIA on behalf of an employer, both you and the employer (such as the owner or an employer contact) must have a personal Job Bank account. You must also both be added to the “Users” section of the employer file for the business. The person who manages the employer file can easily add new users to the file on their own without Job Bank support.

What you can do in LMIA Online

Once you create a Job Bank account, you'll be able to do the following in LMIA Online:

  • submit an LMIA application 24 hours a day, 7 days a week
  • complete or return to an LMIA application before submitting it to Service Canada
  • upload supporting documents
  • securely pay LMIA fees, if applicable
  • get real-time updates on the status of your application
  • view correspondence and decision letters issued by Service Canada
  • review previously submitted applications
  • access and follow the status of your application when a third-party representative is submitting an LMIA application on your behalf
  • create a new LMIA application by copying the information from a previous application

Uploading documents in LMIA Online

The size limit of each document is 6.0 MB. If you need to upload a larger document, divide your file into multiple documents smaller than 6.0 MB each.

  • Documents must be in PDF, RTF, TXT or JPG format
  • There's no limit on the number of documents that you can upload in LMIA Online

Leave out confidential information

Don’t upload any documents containing confidential information, such as:

  • social insurance number (SIN)
  • banking information
  • passport number

LMIA Online: Troubleshooting

Some employers may be unable to access LMIA Online because they can’t create a Job Bank account or they need technical support.

If this applies to you, read the relevant sections below for more information.

If you can’t create a Job Bank account

To use LMIA Online, you need to create a Job Bank account using:

  • a SIN, and
  • a payroll account number associated with a business number issued by the CRA

If you’re unable to create an account, you can still submit an LMIA application by requesting the LMIA application form.

If you need technical support

Contact the relevant team to get help:

If your issue persists, you can request the LMIA application form to submit an application.

How to request the LMIA application form

If your technical issues persist or you can’t get a Job Bank account, contact the LMIA forms team by email for a copy of the LMIA application form: EDSC.DEMANDE.FORMULAIRE.PTET-TFWP.FORM.REQUEST.ESDC@servicecanada.gc.ca

If you’re a third-party representative, you can submit this request on behalf of your client.

Include the following information in your email:

  • steps you’ve taken to resolve the issues preventing you from using LMIA Online
  • company name
  • business number
  • streams you’d like to apply to

We’ll review your request to determine whether an application form is justified in your case. You’ll get a reply by email within 5 business days.

How to submit an LMIA application form

If your request is justified, we'll send you an email with the LMIA application forms along with instructions on how to submit your application to the appropriate processing centre.

Application forms get updated regularly. Make sure you’re submitting the most recent version number, which can be found in the lower left corner of the form.
