1. The Air Force Association of Canada (AFAC) Medal continues to recognize outstanding cadets participating in national flying training. To align with current delivery of the Glider Pilot Training Course (GPTC) and Power Pilot Training Course (PPTC), the Cadets and Junior Canadian Rangers Group (CJCR Gp) has updated the criteria and administration for this medal.
2. At reference A, CATO 52-08, Air Force Association of Canada Medal, is cancelled effective immediately. Updated direction for the awarding of the AFAC Medal is outlined below.
3. The AFAC medal for the GPTC and PPTC will be awarded to cadets who demonstrate the highest overall performance on course, taking into account flying performance, academic achievement, leadership, dress and deportment, motivation, and cooperation with others.
4. Glider Pilot Training Course
   1. Eligibility: The candidate must maintain a high standard of performance throughout the course, successfully pass the final flight test (Air Mission 29) on their first attempt, and successfully pass the Transport Canada GLIDE written examination on their first attempt.
   2. Selection Board Composition: In accordance with Reference B, selection of the recipient will be conducted by a formal board at each location hosting a GPTC. The board will be chaired by the Officer in Charge Flight Training (OIC Flt Trg) and include the Chief Flight Instructor (CFI), along with one additional appointed member. The board will review all eligible candidates and determine the recipient in accordance with the established eligibility and selection criteria.
   3. Presentation: The AFAC Medal for the GPTC will be awarded to one cadet at each host training location. The recipient will be announced and presented the medal during the graduation parade or another formal recognition event in front of peers, staff, and attendees. The medal will, where practicable, be presented by a representative of AFAC or another individual with a significant connection to gliding or aviation.
5. Power Pilot Training Course
   1. Eligibility: The candidate must maintain a high standard of performance throughout the course, successfully pass the Private Pilot Licence – Aeroplane Flight Test on their first attempt, and successfully pass the Transport Canada PPAER written examination on their first attempt.
   2. Selection Board Composition: In accordance with Reference B, selection of the recipient will be conducted by a formal board conducted by the CJCR Gp. The board will be chaired by the National Cadet Air Operations Officer (NCA Ops O), along with two additional appointed members. The board will review all eligible candidates and determine the recipients in accordance with the established eligibility and selection criteria. The board will convene no later than 30 Sep.
   3. Presentation: The AFAC Medal for the PPTC will be awarded to the top five cadets nationally, based on results across all PPTC training locations. Recipients will be identified by CJCR Gp and presentation of the medal will be coordinated through the recipient’s home RCSU. This formal presentation recognizes the recipient’s outstanding achievement in front of peers, staff, and attendees. The medal will, where practicable, be presented by a representative of AFAC or another individual with a significant connection to aviation.
6. As the Honours and Recognition program continues to evolve, the CJCR Gp will publish updated policy as it becomes available.
