Canadian Joint Operations Command

The Canadian Joint Operations Command (CJOC) is the part of the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) that plans, directs, and integrates all-domain military operations in Canada, across North America, and around the world. It ensures the CAF can respond quickly to domestic emergencies, continental defence requirements, and international missions—from early planning through to mission completion.

CJOC’s purpose is to deliver operational excellence at home and abroad in support of Canada’s national security interests and international defence commitments, while upholding the values Canadians expect of their armed forces.

Mission

CJOC prepares for and carries out military operations that protect Canada, support the defence of North America, and contribute to peace and security abroad.

What CJOC does

  • Leads most CAF operations worldwide, except those run solely by Canadian Special Operations Forces Command or North American Aerospace Defence Command (NORAD).
  • Plans for emergencies and provides scalable command, control, and intelligence systems that can be activated quickly.
  • Conducts a wide range of missions, including:
    • Conducting patrols and operations in the Arctic;
    • Supporting international missions such as NATO operations and defence cooperation in the Indo-Pacific region;
    • Maintaining a ready response to emerging crises around the globe; and
    • Responding to natural disasters in Canada.

CJOC structure and roles

CJOC is made up of:

  • Joint Task Force North;
  • 1st Canadian Division;
  • CAF task forces within Canada and internationally;
  • A Canada-wide network of support units, the Canadian Forces Joint Operational Support Group provides logistical and specialist support; and
  • Headquarters, which plans, coordinates and oversees CAF operations.

CJOC is assisted by the:

  • Joint Force Air Component Command
    • of 1 Canadian Air Division
  • Maritime Component Command
    • of Maritime Forces Atlantic
  • Space Component Command
    • of 3 Canadian Space Division
  • Cyber Component Command
    • of CAF Cyber Command
