Combatting hate towards 2SLGBTQI+ communities

As part of Canada’s Action Plan on Combatting Hate, Women and Gender Equality Canada (WAGE) has invested in projects that address hate directed at 2SLGBTQI+ people. These projects have addressed barriers to equality and reduced anti-2SLGBTQI+ hate through education, community engagement, research, and capacity building.

This funding supports victims and survivors and aims at ending harmful practices towards 2SLGBTQI+ communities, which may involve:

  • addressing the root causes
  • identifying who spreads hate and how they do it
  • partnering with the public and private sectors as well as cultural and faith leaders

Funded projects

Through Canada’s Action Plan on Combatting Hate, WAGE invested of $15 million to combat hate towards 2SLGBTQI+ communities.

Starting in 2024-2025, this funding has included:

Building on investments through Canada’s Action Plan on Combatting Hate, the federal government is providing $54.6 million over five years, and $10.9 million ongoing, to strengthen 2SLGBTQI+ communities and expand participation in Canada’s economy and society starting in 2026. Canada is also investing $7.5 million over five years and $1.5 million ongoing to help Pride festivals address security needs driven by increasing anti-2SLGBTQI+ hate and ensure these events can continue safely.
