Elizabeth Penashue is an Innu elder and activist. Born near Churchill Falls, Labrador, she learned the traditional ways of survival and respect for the environment from her parents. In the early 1960s, Penashue and her community were relocated to Sheshatshiu, lured by promises of an easier life and greater opportunities. They soon regretted leaving their home but the subsequent development of Churchill Falls and the creation of the Smallwood Reservoir had destroyed the traditional hunting grounds. Further, low-flying planes conducting military exercises out of Goose Bay had rendered the area inhabitable. Penashue became a spokesperson for her people, drawing attention to the injustices committed against them and leading opposition to the military exercises. The subject of a book, a film, and numerous media stories, she continues to promote the Innu lifestyle. In 2006, Penashue received an honorary doctor of laws degree from Memorial University of Newfoundland.

“I'm not a woman who stays inside all the time.”
