Isolated posts and government housing

Provisions of the Isolated Posts and Government Housing Directive are co-developed by bargaining agents and public service employers who are members of the National Joint Council. The provisions apply to public service employees who are working in isolated locations across Canada and the government housing they live in.

The purpose of the directive is to facilitate the recruitment and retention of staff in these locations. Its provisions help offset some of the higher costs of living and working in isolated places. It also explains the rules for employees who rent Crown-owned accommodation. These provisions do not constitute income or other compensation that is considered as being for personal gain.

Under the Directive, the authorized use of privately owned vehicles (other than on government business travel) may be subject to Lower Kilometric Rates.
