Proactive publication process
This is an overview of the main steps of the proactive publication process. The proactive publication of briefing materials for a new minister is used as an example. Proactively published materials can be found on open.canada.ca.
1. Briefing materials are developed
- The institution prepares briefing material for a new minister. This will include, for example, information about the institution, and background and advice on priorities.
2. Minister takes office
- A briefing package is provided to Minister.
- The clocks starts on 120-day deadline for online publication.
3. Briefing package is prepared for online publication
The institution:
- ensures content will be accessible online for people with different abilities – for example, text descriptions are required to explain tables and graphs, transcripts are included to describe video and audio files
- ensures the content complies with Canada.ca Content Style Guide
- reviews documents to identify information that should be withheld in accordance with the Access to Information Act – for example, to protect national security interests
4. Translation
- Documents are translated into the other official language.
5. Web coding
- The institution codes briefing material for the website and reviews for quality.
6. Publish online
- Information is posted on the Open Government Portal.
