Internet of things (IoT)

The Internet of Things (IoT) refers to physical devices (also called "smart" or "connected" devices) that connect to each other via the Internet. They collect and exchange information with one another and with users. Smart devices can be remotely controlled and monitored, or work automatically through a variety of software, cameras and sensors.

Because these devices are connected to the Internet, their internal computer hardware systems (called embedded systems) can use cloud computing to better perform their functions. Once a device with an embedded system is connected to the Internet, it becomes an IoT device. For example, in the case of a programmable thermostat, connecting to the Internet allows a user to change the temperature via an app on their mobile phone without physically adjusting their thermostat.
