Hailstorms
Hail is precipitation from thunderstorms made of solid ice. Hail can range in size, from the size of a pea to a grapefruit. Hailstorms can occur anywhere in Canada. The most frequent and severe hailstorms have been in parts of the prairies, particularly the Calgary to Red Deer area, which can expect up to 10 hailstorms a year. Hailstorms are most common from late spring through summer. They usually occur during afternoon thunderstorms, but they can occur anytime when the conditions are right.
Why prepare for hailstorms
Hailstorms with large hail can be very destructive. Hail can cause damage to cars, houses and buildings, and can cause bodily injury. Even storms with small hail can cause serious damage to fruit, vegetable and grain crops in the summer growing season.
