An overview of Canada’s actions at COP29.

As COP29 wraps up, Canada reaffirms its commitment to global climate action and remains determined to keep 1.5 °C alive.

Canada was one of 50 Countries who signed onto the Baku Declaration on Water for Climate Action committing to addressing the causes and impacts of climate change on water basins and integrating of water-related mitigation and adaptation measures in national climate policies.
Canada signed onto a joint press release with like-minded ambitious countries on 1.5°C-aligned ambition in NDCs toward Net Zero.

Canada's Ambassador for Climate Change took the podium to deliver Canada’s National Statement, highlighting Canada’s commitment to a COP29 outcome that keeps 1.5 ºC within reach, and a transformative climate finance goal that addresses the nature and scale of the climate crisis.

Minister Guilbeault issued a statement on Canada’s commitment to reaching a finance deal at COP29.
Canada joined over 30 countries in endorsing the Reducing Methane from Organic Waste Declaration, committing to set sectoral targets to reduce methane emissions from organic waste within future NDCs.

Canada, alongside the UK and Germany, is leading efforts at COP29 to scale up international support for industrial decarbonization (PDF) in emerging markets and developing economies (EMDEs), aiming to unlock significant investments and drive a just transition to clean energy.

Canada announced $1.25M to support the UN Secretary-General’s Climate Action Team project, including efforts to mobilize countries to submit credible and ambitious Nationally Determined Contributions (NDC) in 2025.
As a Global Methane Pledge Champion, Canada signed an open letter (PDF) calling on all Pledge participants as well as subnational governments, private companies, and non-governmental actors to continue and accelerate efforts to reduce methane emissions as rapidly as possible in this critical decade and beyond.

As a proud member of the High Ambition Coalition (HAC), Canada endorsed the HAC COP29 Leaders Statement.
At an event on Accelerating Africa’s Climate Leadership to Action, Canada announced 2 climate finance contributions:
- Canada is investing $10M in the Conservation International "Limpopo Transfrontier Conservation Area" project, supporting biodiversity in Mozambique, South Africa and Zimbabwe, to improve protected areas and enhance livelihoods for 182,000 people.
- Canada is investing $2.5M in the World Wildlife Fund Canada "Building Resilient Communities through Marine Conservation in Madagascar" project, supporting efforts to halt biodiversity loss, support communities to adopt climate smart practices and empower women conservationists.

During the World Leaders Climate Action Summit at COP29, Minister Guilbeault announces major Canadian-led climate finance platform.
Canada signed onto the European Commission’s new Methane Abatement Partnership Roadmap (PDF) to further accelerate the reduction of methane emissions associated with fossil energy production and consumption.
