Tracking and reporting Canada's climate finance

Canada contributes its climate finance investments through various departments and agencies. They work closely together to track Canada’s climate finance in order to present a full picture of Canada’s contribution to address climate change.

Canada is required to regularly report on its climate finance through National Communications and Biennial Reports. Reporting on climate finance under the UNFCCC has improved significantly in recent years, particularly for donor countries, in comprehensiveness and transparency.

Transparent reporting of our information on climate financing helps to:

  • showcase successful contributions
  • strengthen accountability and results
  • promote good reporting practices

This is why Canada reports at the project level for all of its climate finance. Canada is committed to continuing to improve the overall transparency and tracking of its climate finance. Canada is working with other donors and international organizations, such as the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), to improve the measurement and reporting of climate finance.

Chapter 6 of Canada’s 4th Biennial Report provides more information on support recently provided by Canada to developing countries.

Canada’s climate finance is also reported through other Government of Canada’s reports including the Report to Parliament on the Government of Canada’s International Assistance, the Statistical Reports on International Assistance, and Canada’s report to the OECD Development Assistance Committee on international assistance flows provided by Canadian governments (federal, provincial and municipal).
