Allowance

    Avoid delays in receiving your benefit payments by signing up for direct deposit. It's fast, secure, and convenient.

    To update your information in My Service Canada Account (MSCA):

    1. Call 1‑800‑277‑9914 or visit a Service Canada location to activate your notifications and alerts
      • You only need to do this once
    2. Register and sign in to MSCA
    3. On your OAS dashboard, select "Profile", then choose "Manage my payment destination"
      • Once your change is confirmed, your new banking information will show under "Payment details" on the Profile page.

The Allowance is a monthly tax-free payment you can get if:

  • you are 60 to 64 years old,
  • you have low income, and
  • your spouse is eligible to receive the Guaranteed Income supplement (GIS)

You should apply for the Allowance 6 to 11 months before you turn 60. If you are already 60 to 64 years old you should apply as soon as possible.

If you were in receipt of the Allowance and your spouse or common-law partner has passed away, you will be automatically converted to the Allowance for the Survivor.

up to $1,428.06/month
