Canada Student Grants and Loans

Starting August 1, 2026, students going to private, for-profit international schools, are no longer be eligible for federal funding. Students who received federal student aid for their current program, while at the same school, may still qualify until July 31, 2029.

Most full-time students going to private, for-profit schools in Canada, are also no longer eligible for the Canada Student Grant for Full-Time Students. Students attending some programs may be exempt from this restriction.

If you were not approved for funding and think you or your school may qualify, contact your provincial or territorial student aid office.

The Canada Student Financial Assistance Program offers grants and loans to students to help pay for their post-secondary education.

There are two types of funding:

  • Grants, which do not need to be paid back
  • Loans, which is borrowed money you must repay when you finish your studies. They are designed to cover:
    • tuition
    • living expenses
    • school related costs

Both are available to students of low and middle incomes, students with dependants and students with disabilities.
