My parents are immigrants from South Korea. And so, when I was a child and teenager, we did not have any extra money nor dental insurance to see a dentist regularly. The motivation to help other families and other Canadians that were in my personal situation was probably the main motivating factor for me to sign up for the Canadian Dental Care Plan.

As a dentist, I believe the Canadian Dental Care Plan is a very important initiative and it's like historical events because without dental care plans, many people have been neglecting dental care, which leads to a bigger issue down the line. I've seen people with big cavities that have never been addressed and they unfortunately end up at a hospital which costs the government more, and it also costs the patient more too.
There is scientific evidence that there is connection between oral health disease and systemic whole-body disease. I think what the CDCP, for me personally, has made me realize is to no longer restrict access based on socioeconomic status, financial wealth, or having dental insurance.
The Canadian Dental Care Plan is actually very easy for my front desk administration team to adapt.
At first, there's a lot of misinformation, like how complicated is administration going to be? But in real life, it's actually the opposite. With the Canadian Dental Care Plan, the payments come in directly from Sunlife to the clinics; the patients never need to pay upfront, just the difference. So, we actually save a lot of administration time.

After registration, the technical support and the administrative support that we received from Sunlife was excellent.
There are certain patients in my clinic that I know of whose lives have not just been improved, but transformed because of the CDCP. I want to see other Canadian oral health care professionals experience this--to be able to take patients out of pain, allow patients to smile confidently for the first time in years has been tremendously rewarding, thanks to the CDCP.
