Departmental Sustainable Development Strategy

1. Context for the Departmental Sustainable Development Strategy

The 2019–2022 Federal Sustainable Development Strategy (FSDS):

  • sets out the Government of Canada’s sustainable development priorities
  • establishes goals and targets
  • identifies actions to achieve them, as required by the Federal Sustainable Development Act

In keeping with the objectives of the act to make environmental decision-making more transparent and accountable to Parliament, the Secretariat of the National Security and Intelligence Committee of Parliamentarians supports reporting on the implementation of the FSDS and its Departmental Sustainable Development Strategy, or equivalent document, through the activities described in this supplementary information table.

2. Sustainable development in the Secretariat of the National Security and Intelligence Committee of Parliamentarians

The Secretariat of the National Security and Intelligence Committee of Parliamentarians’ Departmental Sustainable Development Strategy for 2019 to 2022 describes the department’s actions in support of achieving a low-carbon government. This supplementary information table presents available results for the departmental actions pertinent to this goal. Last year’s supplementary information table is posted on the Secretariat’s website.

3. Departmental performance by FSDS goal

The following table provides performance information on departmental actions in support of the FSDS goal listed in section 2.

While no formal commitment was included in performance plans, the Secretariat’s executive eliminated single-use plastics as part of hospitality procurement for Committee meetings. It also committed to environmentally friendly procurement. Notable initiatives include:
  • No longer purchasing bottled water;
  • Eliminated plastic plates and utensils for hospitality;
  • Procures paper from a source with a zero deforestation commitment without compromising value for money;
  • Printers have a default setting for double-sided printing.

4. Report on integrating sustainable development

While the Secretariat is a micro-organization, it is nonetheless committed to integrating sustainable development considerations into decision-making processes, primarily in its procurement of goods and services. Over the past year, the Secretariat sought to minimize its carbon footprint and contributing to greening government by eliminating single use plastics and procuring environmentally friendly goods and services. This approach will continue into the next reporting period.

During the 2019–20 reporting cycle, the Secretariat of the National Security and Intelligence Committee of Parliamentarians had no proposals that required a Strategic Environmental Assessment and no public statements were produced.
