Indian Settlement Remission Orders Tax Relief

The following information is to be used with the pamphlet entitled Information on Tax Relief for Indians and Bands on Certain Settlements , dated May 1994. Note that “District Taxation Office” and “Excise/GST District Office” addresses listed on the back of the pamphlet have changed. Current information about your tax services offices is listed under “Revenue Canada” in the “Government of Canada” section of the telephone book.

On April 1, 1997, the provincial sales tax in three participating provinces, Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, and Newfoundland, was harmonized with the Goods and Services Tax (GST) to create the Harmonized Sales Tax (HST). HST applies to the same base of goods and services as the GST, at a rate of 15%. Of this, 7% represents the federal component, and 8% represents the provincial component of the HST.

Listed below are the settlements covered by each remission order. Associated band names appear in brackets.
