You can file your return electronically and pay any amounts owing at the same time through a participating Canadian bank or credit union. The institution transmits the return in a standard format to the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) through a system called GST/HST Electronic Data Interchange (EDI).

Possible fee

Some financial institutions may charge a fee for this service.

Filing in person at a financial institution

In some circumstances, it is possible to file a paper return through a participating Canadian financial institution. However, unless you are a charity, selected listed financial institution, or you have an exemption, you are required to file electronically.

Refer to: File a paper return in person at a financial institution

What you can and cannot do

Most GST/HST registrants can file a regular return using this method.

You can:

  • Meet electronic filing requirements
  • Get a confirmation number right away
  • File without a GST/HST access code
  • File without an online CRA account
  • Include schedules B and C (depending on the financial institution)
  • File a return for a non-resident

You cannot:

File electronically and send forms by mail

If you want to file your return through your financial institution but need to file an additional form or rebate claim, you can include the amount on your electronic return and mail the form to the applicable tax centre.

Make sure the tax centre receives the form on or before the due date of your return.

If you cannot file electronically through your financial institution

Choose another filing method that works for you.

Before you start

If you plan to file your return and remit any tax through your financial institution, make sure you:

How to file

  1. Register with a participating Canadian financial institution
  2. Provide the financial institution with your GST/HST return information through your computer, by phone, or another electronic method they provide
    • Your financial institution will convert the information into a return in the required format and will transmit the return to the CRA
  3. Provide the financial institution with any payment information needed
    • Your financial institution will remit your payment
    • Your funds are guaranteed to be transferred on the date you set with your bank
  4. If you are expecting a refund, it can be deposited directly into your account within 10 to 15 calendar days if you have registered for direct deposit
