Authorize a Representative

Effective July 15, 2025, the Authorize a Representative service in EFILE will no longer be available to representatives of individual clients. Instead, representatives will need to use the Represent a Client portal to request online access to an account. Note that How to give authorization provides instructions to taxpayers regarding authorization requests.

Beware of scam targeting EFILERs

The CRA would like to remind EFILERs that we will never send a message asking for their ID and password. We are aware of a scam that imitates the EFILE login site but asks for an EFILE number and password during login. The CRA also encourages EFILERs to review the security practices for electronic filers and only access the EFILE sign in page from official Canada.ca pages. If you believe that your EFILE ID and password have been compromised as result of this or other scams, contact the EFILE Helpdesk immediately.

Overview

EFILE is an automated service that allows approved tax preparation service providers and discounters in Canada to electronically file their clients' current and first seven prior years' income tax and benefit return information to the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) directly from their EFILE–certified tax preparation software.

Taxpayers may take their tax slips and supporting documents to a registered tax preparer and for a fee, the tax preparer will prepare their return and send it to us electronically using EFILE.

Access to the EFILE Electronic Filing Service is limited solely for the purpose of the electronic filing of any return of income. Any other use is prohibited.

Many new enhancements are implemented to improve EFILE services. To keep up to date on the latest news and important dates, visit the EFILE news and program updates webpage.

To participate in the Community Volunteer Income Tax Program (CVITP)

You must first register as a volunteer with the CVITP at canada.ca/taxes-volunteer. If you intend on transmitting returns by EFILE under the CVITP, you must also apply for an EFILE number.

T2 Corporation Internet Filing

Do not register for EFILE if you are only filing your own T2 Corporation income tax return. Visit the Corporation Internet Filing web page for more information.

Apply for EFILE

Any firm, organization, or individual who provides tax preparation services can apply, as long as they meet the definition and requirements of an applicant and pass the suitability screening criteria.

EFILE certified software

EFILE "certified" tax preparation software means that the developer of the tax preparation software has gone through a process with the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) to verify that their product is compatible with the CRA EFILE electronic tax filing service.

Yearly renewal

To renew your account, sign in with your EFILE number and password and select "Renew account" on the resulting webpage. Yearly renewal is mandatory for your continued participation in electronic filing. An invitation to renew your account will be sent each year towards the end of October.
