Canada Groceries and Essentials Benefit (CGEB)

Previous name: GST/HST credit

The Canada Groceries and Essentials Benefit (CGEB) replaced the GST/HST credit in July 2026. Under its new name, the eligibility, payment calculation, and structure is the same as it was for the GST/HST credit.

The benefit provides tax-free quarterly payments to individuals and families with low and modest incomes to help manage the rising costs of everyday essentials. In July 2026, there was a 25% increase to the benefit amount which will remain for 5 years from 2026 to 2031.

When you file your taxes, you are automatically considered for the benefit and any related provincial and territorial programs.
