Canada Revenue Agency virtual assistant consultation
Status: Open
The Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) launched a generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) virtual assistant (previously called the CRA GenAI Chatbot) in March 2025. The virtual assistant uses GenAI to help users quickly find trusted information about CRA programs and services from Canada.ca web content.
Since the virtual assistant’s launch, we have continued to improve it by applying user feedback, updating engineering prompts, refining source information, and testing it rigorously. In May 2026, we released an update that supports ongoing improvements to the quality and consistency of virtual assistant answers and allows for future improvements. We will also be adding it to the secure CRA Account portal for individuals.
Consultation overview
During the fall of 2026, the CRA will ask for feedback about the virtual assistant through roundtable discussions with representatives from the tax industry. Participation is by invitation only.
Participants will have the opportunity to discuss:
- how to make the virtual assistant a trusted first source of tax information
- how to improve the quality of the virtual assistant’s answers
- examples of answers that did not fully meet user needs
- possible ways to improve functions and capabilities for the CRA to consider
- preferences for giving the CRA feedback on the virtual assistant
This consultation is part of a broader engagement process. Earlier in 2026, the CRA also gathered input through public opinion research with virtual assistant users and tested its usability with individuals and hard-to-reach or vulnerable populations.
What’s next
We will use the feedback to shape future upgrades to the virtual assistant and its long-term development strategy. Once we have reviewed all feedback, we will share a summary of what we learned on Consultations and engagement at the Canada Revenue Agency.
