Canada Research Coordinating Committee discusses Canada’s research response to the COVID-19 global pandemic

In November 2020, the Canadian Science Policy Centre’s (CSPC) 2020 virtual conference hosted a panel discussion with Canada’s Chief Science Advisor and executive leaders from the Canada Research Coordinating Committee (CRCC) to talk about Canada’s research efforts in combatting COVID-19.

As COVID-19 emerged as a global health crisis in January 2020, Canadian researchers, postsecondary institutions and the federal research funding agencies mobilized for a rapid response. With a focus on public health and the social impacts of what would soon be declared a pandemic, they launched efforts to share research knowledge, advance joint strategies, and engage a broad spectrum of research strengths to respond to COVID-19.

Joining the Chief Science Advisor Mona Nemer for the discussion were these CRCC members:

  • Michael J Strong—2020 CRCC Chair and President, Canadian Institutes of Health Research
  • Roseann O’Reilly Runte—President and CEO, Canada Foundation for Innovation
  • Ted Hewitt—President, Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada
  • Alejandro Adem—President, Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada
  • Roger Scott-Douglas—Acting President, National Research Council

The panel discussed efforts to mobilize the Canadian science, technology and innovation sector around COVID-19, while sharing lessons learned for addressing future global challenges.
