April 1 to June 30, 2026: Quarterly progress report update on the Centre Block project
We're restoring and modernizing the Centre Block. We're also designing and building the Parliament Welcome Centre (PWC). It's the largest and most complex heritage rehabilitation ever seen in Canada. We estimate the cost to be between $4.5 billion and $5 billion. We aim to complete main construction between 2030 and 2031. The Centre Block will reopen about 1 year later. This will allow Parliament to do testing and get the building ready for operations.

Construction progress
An update on current construction activities for the Centre Block project.
Parliament Welcome Centre
The construction of levels 2 and 3 is approximately 75% complete. The project remains on schedule to finish pouring both levels by the end of 2026.

Centre Block: Upper Levels
Throughout the Centre Block, we continue to brace, remove and rebuild the upper floors for a stronger, safer, more resilient building.
The Peace Tower now has a new foundation. This new base slab is secured to the main level of the building.

Structural rebuild: 37% complete
Centre Block: Basement Levels
Excavation continues in the west and east courtyard areas for the new Centre Block basement levels. This complex work is progressing carefully to preserve the structural and heritage aspects of the upper floors.

Basement excavation: Approximately 3,300 truckloads
Centre Block: Exterior
Masonry work has started in all courtyards, starting with dismantling the walls.
Installation of scaffolding along the south façade is scheduled to be complete by the end of 2026.

Cost update
Spending to date on the Centre Block project is approximately $1.790 billion.
The overall budget was established based on a cost report completed in 2021. The report was provided by an independent consultant who validated the method we used to establish cost for the construction.

Project spotlight
Each quarter, we highlight an element of work being done on the Centre Block project.
Restoring the Speakers’ dining rooms
When architects John A. Pearson and J. Omer Marchand re-designed the Centre Block after a fire destroyed the original building in 1916, they included approximately 50 special heritage rooms. This includes the Speakers’ dining rooms, which are being carefully restored to reflect their original 20th-century designs while being adapted for modern use. The Speakers often host special events and important guests who are visiting Parliament, including foreign leaders, diplomats and Nobel laureates.
We are bringing back the architects’ vision to the Speakers’ dining rooms.
Senate Speaker’s dining room
The Senate Speaker’s dining room will be restored to its original appearance, as layers of paint are removed from the ceiling plasterwork to reveal its exceptional details.
House of Commons Speaker’s dining room
The House of Commons Speaker’s dining room will be restored to include many original details, such as the gold ceiling, cove details and previously covered stencil details on the walls.
