Control of pests in federal buildings
Public Services and Procurement Canada recognizes that pests can be concerning to employees and takes all complaints seriously. Pest management programs are in place within our office locations to ensure that identified pest problems are treated quickly. We have also implemented increased monitoring, as a result of employee concerns and as a way to proactively address the issue.
When pests are reported, we have a robust pest management plan to deal with pests in federal buildings. This plan may include bringing in pest management experts to confirm the presence of pests through an initial inspection. If pests are confirmed, appropriate measures are completed. Appropriate measures may include building repairs, installation of traps, vacuuming, steaming and applying a treatment spray. Whenever possible, these measures are done after hours to minimize the impact on employees. The application of treatment sprays are done in accordance with applicable regulations.

Reporting a pest problem
Early reporting remains the cornerstone of effective pest control. If employees suspect that there are pests present in their workplace, they should notify their manager and call the National Service Call Centre at 1‑800‑463‑1850 so an investigation and treatment can take place, if needed. Calls placed to the National Service Call Centre remain anonymous.

Help maintain a pest-free workplace
As building occupants, we have a role to play in maintaining a pest-free workplace. Colder weather brings pests indoors, and every effort should be made to keep offices and workspaces free of food waste that could attract pests.
Anything perishable should be kept away from the workspace and you are encouraged to eat lunch away from your desk. If you do eat at your desk, be sure to dispose of any food waste promptly in the designated kitchen or appropriate area on your floor; not in your desk-side garbage can.
Guidance for a pest-free workplace
Here are tips regarding pests in federal buildings:
- Evidence of rats, mice, bats and insects should be reported to the National Service Call Centre at 1‑800‑463‑1850
- Workstations, meeting areas and kitchenettes should be kept tidy and clean
- While pests are particularly drawn indoors during the cold season, efforts to preserve a waste-free workplace will help to control pest issues at all times of the year
- Appropriate waste containers should be used for food and drink disposal immediately after use
- Recycling bins are to be used for recyclable items only and not for perishable items
- Dishes should be washed at the end of every meal and hermetically sealed containers used to store food
- Refrigerators and toasters should be emptied and cleaned on a regular basis
- Spills should be cleaned up as soon as they occur
- Coffee areas have a greater potential of spills (coffee, sugar packets, cream / milk cups, water) and must be kept clean after each use
- Report structural damages or deficiencies (such as leaky pipes, broken windows, improperly closed doors) to the National Service Call Centre
